Our Story
The cafe GROUNDED has been created through Coffee:Works, a co-operative business development programme that was open to all residents of Barking and Dagenham to join.
The programme took place this summer and taught participants everything there is to know about the art of coffee making and how to run a cafe. Have a look at the Info Pack for Coffee:Works here.
The programme Coffee:Works was designed by Every One Every Day, co-delivered with coffee experts Ottos, and supported by Barking Riverside Limited. It consisted of four phases:

PHASE 1 | DISCOVER
It started with a Discover phase that included a hands-on workshop open to 20 people where they discovered coffee making.

PHASE 2 | LEARN
Participants then applied to join a four week long intensive Learn phase that saw 16 of them learn the ins & outs of running a coffee shop and the group also co-designed their own business values from the importance of environmental impact to the co-operative business structure to what should be on the menu.

phase 3 | set up
In the Set Up phase participants learnt to set up the cafe at The Wilds, moving operations from the Every One Every Day Warehouse to the cafe location at Barking Riverside.

PHASE 4 | EARN
The Earn phase is the final phase and sees the group open GROUNDED on Sat 24th July 2021 at the Wilds. All participants get to experience running the cafe before there will be a final team assigned to run the cafe as a co-operative till April 2022. The cafe staff earns the London Living Wage
The cafe was made possible through a collaboration between Barking Riverside Limited, Every One Every Day and the residents of Barking and Dagenham.
It’s a live experiment in co-creating a viable co-operative business that cares about people, the local community and the planet.
PARTICIPATORY CITY FOUNDATION
Every One Every Day is an initiative across the borough of Barking and Dagenham and supports 1000s of local residents in neighbourhood projects - from cooking to making to growing to playing to looking after bees and chickens. Every One Every Day also offers learning and earning programmes to incubate collaborative, essential businesses such as GROUNDED. BARKING RIVERSIDE LIMITED
Overlooking London’s iconic River Thames, Barking Riverside is founded on an ambitious vision for what placemaking can achieve. One of the most exciting new developments in Europe, the project will help transform a 443-acre former industrial site into a new London district that everyone can be proud of. Co-created in close partnership with existing residents, the area is growing to become an exciting and vibrant neighbourhood of over 10,000 homes, commercial and leisure space, new schools and facilities, public open spaces and riverside walks. Connectivity will be enhanced by a new London Overground station and an Uber Boat by Thames Clippers pier.
The project is being delivered by master developers Barking Riverside Limited (BRL), a joint venture between housing association L&Q and the Mayor of London. BRL are partnering with local people, stakeholders, plot developers and urban design and architecture firm Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, to help create a place that is ‘Barking Made’, with pride and purpose for everyone.
